Case A
Signalment: 10-year-old spayed female poodle, FiFi weighing 10 pounds Physical Examination: 4/6 holosystolic murmur; mitral PMI, T = 100.2, P = 200, R = panting Hydration appears normal. A moderate amount of dental tarter is present.
History: Cough and syncopal episodes with exercise, orthopnea. The signs have been present for 6 weeks.

Thoracic and abdominal radiographs disclosed

  • generalized cardiac enlargement and left atrial enlargement resulting in elevation of the left mainstem bronchus
  • mild pulmonary edema
  • hepatomegaly

List Fifi's problems identified from history, physical exam and radiographs. Discuss the significance of the problems.

FiFi was treated with the following medications. Please look up in a cardiology text what each of these drugs does.

  • Digoxin
  • Lasix (furosemide)
  • Captopril

4 days later she is vomiting, anorexic, has diarrhea, is weak, and atrial premature contractions (APC) are observed on electrocardiogram.
