Creatinine clearance

urine creatinine (mg/dl) x urine volume (mls/min) ¸ body weight (kg)
serum creatinine (mg/dl)

N = 2-4 ml/min/kg

Fractional phosphate excretion:

serum creatinine (mg/dl) X urine phosphorus (mg/dl)
urine creatinine (mg/dl) serum phosphorus (mg/dl)

N = 0.07 + .05

24 hour urine protein quantitation:

urine volume (ml/24 hrs) X urine protein concentration (mg/dl)
100

N = 14 + 8 mg/kg/day dog

N = 17 + 9 mg/kg/day cat

Urine protein:creatinine ratio

urine protein (mg/dl)
urine creatinine (mg/dl)

N <1

Water intake: 20-30 ml/lb/day (44-66 ml/kg/day)

Urine output: 12-24 ml/lb/day (20-44 ml/kg/day)

Insensible water loss: 1/2 ml/kcal/day (10-15 ml/lb/day)

Osmolality Calculation

Method one: 2 [Na+ (mEq/L)] + glucose (mg/dl) /18 + urea nitrogen (mg/dl)/2.8

Method two:  1.86 [Na+ + K+] glucose (mg/dl)/18 + urea nitrogen (mg/dl) / 2.8 +9

N = 280 - 310 mosmol/L

Adjusted serum calciumcalcium (mg/dl) - albumin (mg/dl) + 3.5

Red Blood Cell Parameters

Mean corpuscular volume (MCV):

PCV x 10 = MCV (femtoliters)
RBC (millions)

N = 60 - 77 canine 39 - 53 feline

Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH):

hemoglobin x 10 = MCH (picograms)
RBC (millions)

N = 19.5 - 24.5 canine 13-17 feline

Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC):

hemoglobin x 100 = MCHC (g/dl)
PCV

N = 32 - 36 canine 30 - 36 feline

Absolute reticulocyte count

% reticulocytes x RBC (millions) = absolute count

> 70,000 indicates regeneration

Blood Volume:

40 mls/lb canine (90 ml/kg)

30 mls/lb feline (70 ml/kg)

Blood Transfusions:

ml of blood = recipient wt(kg) x   90 (dog) x   desired pcv - recipient pcv
  70 (cat) donor PCV

Fluid Deficit Calculation:

% deficit x body weight (kg) = liters of fluid to replace
